The Laundress Hearts Tokyo - Part 1

In November, Lindsey took a journey to Tokyo to visit our Laundress Japanese Team (and beloved retail stores), launch The Laundress Candles, meet the press, and give cleaning demonstrations to Laundress clients and fans…needless to say she was very busy.

In spite of her jam packed itinerary (see below), she managed to slip in some time for good food and some serious shopping - Here's some highlights from the first half of her whirlwind trip - Part 2 is coming tomorrow!!

Spotted! The Laundress at J.Crew Madison Avenue

The Laundress is now at a select 85 J.Crew stores - and was recently spotted at the J.Crew Women's Collection Shop on Madison Ave.

Gwen paid the shop a visit and had the opportunity to chat with our favorite stylist, Liz. Having the Laundress wisdom at her fingertips, Liz took advantage of the moment to get some cleaning tips straight from the source.

Liz just got a key piece for her new fall uniform - a navy cashmere sweater, of course!

She hasn't had a day off yet to wash - and dry in time - her newest go-to sweater. In the meantime she has been putting in the freezer each night to keep it fresh. Gwen told her she should be using the steamer in the back room instead - steam is more effective to kill bacteria (which causes odor) and the moisture is ideal to fluff and freshen the yarns too! Liz is also getting a Cashmere Spray, which has natural antibacterial properties to freshen between washing and wearing as well - complements of The Laundress.

Liz tells us that the Sweater Comb has been popular with the customers, and is imperative for her daily cashmere wears & combs, too!

Erica's Demonstration at Bloomingdale's

Our rockstar Sales Manager Erica Vendettuoli recently visited Bloomingdale's in Manhattan to give their Cashmere Shop Sales Associates a demonstration with the Laundress Wool & Cashmere Shampoo. Upon hearing about the visit, I was filled with questions - she was kind enough to answer a couple of them below.

What does that training entail exactly, and why now?
I generally visit our stores in New York quarterly. During a training I will cover a brief history of the company (why&how we were founded), educate the staff on our products in the store's inventory, and will instruct the staff on how to use it - sometimes I will even do a demo!

For this training with Bloomingdale's, I met with the sales associates in the cashmere department, as they will now be selling our Wool & Cashmere Shampoo. The images are of the demonstration I did - hand washing a cashmere scarf.

What's the purpose of these visits?
This is to help the associates with selling The Laundress products. I will always hand out samples of the product for the staff to try; after the sales people have the opportunity to try our products, it becomes much easier to for them to speak to clients about the Laundress.

Do you do trainings like this often?
I visit all New York stores quarterly- to meet new staff members, introduce new products, and sometimes I will even work on the floor directly with a store's clients. For stores not located in New York, I typically will set up a training conference call towards the same purposes.

What sort of reaction do you get from salespeople - do you ever encounter any surprise that cashmere is best NOT dry cleaned?
Most salespeople are very surprised when I tell them it’s actually better to wash their silk and wool/cashmere items - of course, they all agree that they do not like dry cleaning!

Things We Love - Babette's Book Recommendations!

You've seen Gwen's Tale from London describing this white tee's emergency operation. Today we follow her to the next appointment - at The Society Club Soho!  (Don't Remember? Here's a Refresher!)

After an eventful lunch at Dover Street Market's Rose Cafe, I met with Babette at the Society Club Soho where some of our Laundress products are available. Babette has curated this cozy and inviting space with an eclectic mix of items - the kind of place that exercises your willpower to not take home everything. Unfortunately for me, but luckily for my bank account, I didn't have room in my luggage for all the things I wanted!

The Society Club is, first and foremost, a bookstore - one with a succinct mix of new, used and first edition works.

I took advantage of the opportunity to ask Babette for some book recommendations for my upcoming holiday. Here's what she had for me :

The Laundress Now Available in London! Exclusively at The Society Club in Soho.

We are delighted to announce that The Laundress has landed in Britain and is now exclusively available at the impossibly cool Society Club in London's famed SoHo district. The Society Club is the brainchild of true arbiters of culture, with Carrie Karnia (book publishing rockstar) and Babette Kulik (fashion industry luminary) occupying an eclectic and comforting space that defies description. Part intellectual salon, with dashes of bookstore, art gallery and curio shoppe, the space deftly houses three canine companions along with a 1940's chandelier, and the proprietors have a certain knack for tracking down limited edition, out of print or just plain hard to find books.

Here's how they describe the endeavor on their blog (which is filled with fun and you should absolutely check out) :

The Society Club is an independent bookstore with an eclectic mix of new, used and first editions as well as an art space/gallery, currently playing host to the photography of Derek Ridgers.   We carry London honey, Laundress Cleaning Products, vintage hotel ashtrays, Constance Spry vases and a fine selection of the finest Tunnock’s treats.   We’ll also serve you coffee, tea, cake, cookies and crumpets (with homemade marmalade) while you have a browse.  We host really interesting events, including book launches, poetry readings, workshops and amazing photo exhibits.

So, next time you find yourself in Soho (London, not New York) swing by and see what they have going on. You can tell them the Laundress sent you.

Cashmere Care
(from J.Crew Cashmere Affair- August 30, 2011)

Who better to advise on cashmere care than the ladies at The Laundress New York?  We got the inside scoop from Lindsey and Gwen, the brains behind the eco-friendly line of specialty detergent and fabric-care products, on how to make our cashmere last forever (and save money doing it!).
We are sick of spending money on dry-cleaning bills! Walk us through how to hand wash a cashmere sweater.
First of all, dry cleaners use all sorts of chemicals on clothes and are expensive.  One bottle of The Laundress New York for J. Crew cashmere wash is only $18 and you can get upwards of 32 washes out of it.  Cashmere is a luxury good that’s meant to last and should be treated with care, so hand washing is the best option for keeping your cashmere like new.  Caring in between washing and wearing is just as important too.
What’s the best way to store cashmere?
Always clean your items before storing.  Do not store your sweaters in plastic- use cotton bags that close with zippers.  Plastic creates an environment for moth breeding- perfume, body oils and other products, such as deodorant, are food for the bugs!  Bugs will not eat through cotton.  Spray with The Laundress New York for J.Crew cashmere spray, which is a natural moth and bug repellent, in between washing, wearing and storing.
What are some other must-know cashmere-care tips?
Pilling happens from wearing, not washing.  Pilling is not necessarily a sign of poor quality; it’s actually the cashmere naturally shedding.  A good pill remover is essential and we have tried them all, which is why we designed The Laundress New York for J.Crew sweater comb.  To remove odor from wearing, storing or previous dry-cleaning, soak with water and vinegar for half an hour.
What’s in your cashmere treatment?
All The Laundress products are naturally derived, nontoxic and 100 percent biodegradable and do not have any artificial colors.  The Laundress New York for J.Crew cashmere wash is a coconut soap base scented with lavender extracts and is exclusively made for J.Crew.  Not only does it smell amazing, but it is also a natural moth and bug repellent.
Here’s our step-by-step guide for hand washing your cashmere (it’s easier than you think!).
Pre-Treating
·         First, de-pill by combing the areas with The Laundress New York for J.Crew sweater comb.
·         Examine the sweater for stains and pre-treat with a stain solution if necessary.
·         Turn inside out (stains and odors mostly build up on the underarms and inside of garments).
Hand Washing
·         Prepare a basin of cool/tepid water plus two capfuls of The Laundress New York for J.Crew  cashmere wash.
·         Submerge and press gently with your hands and let soak for 15 to 30 minutes.
·         Rinse the sweater well, pressing out the excess water, but do not wring.
Drying/Finishing
·       Using a flat drying rack is the best or lay a towel flat and place the sweater on top of it in its natural shape to dry- never hang cashmere because it will distort the fabric and ruin the fit.
